The Placebo Effect Examined And Studied

Digesting a medicine that does not contain any medical substance is called a placebo. People taking placebos generally are unaware that they are taking a medical substance. People that have become better taking a substance that contains no medicine is called the placebo effect.

Skeptics point out that homeopathy is effective because of the placebo effect. Homeopathic remedies contain real dilute amounts of medicine. Many have no measurable amount of medicine. Skeptics say that homeopathy works because of the placebo effect. How effective is a placebo is baffling question that scientists are trying to answer?

Placebo studies have shown that patients get better 1/3 of the time taking dummy pills. Patients believe they are getting better by taking this medicine. These studies are minute in size and more trials are needed.

The placebo effect can also be difficult to measure due to the fact that many people can cure their illness just on their own. The body’s own immune system helps to fight disease and taking the placebo pills really would not speed up that process. However, the placebo pill may make the person feel better since they are inclined in thinking the medicine given has helped them.

Another interesting question is how do dogs, cats and babies respond to a placebo? These groups are not aware that they are taking medicine so the placebo effect does not really exist within these groups. However, the placebo effect may exist with the person giving the medication. The person giving the medication may feel an improvement in the condition within these groups because they had provided a remedy. How much a dog, cat or baby would get better on their own is not know if they had not taken a placebo.

Placebos need more research funding. They have not been studied enough at this point. An abundant amount of over the counter medication has not been studied and research. Many people are unaware of how common medicines work. Aspirin cures many people headaches but most people do not realize how their headaches were helped.

Homeopathic studies are very favorable versus prescription or over the count medicine in studies. Most research suggest that homeopathic remedies work as well as prescription medicines. A trial study with a hay fever nasal spray showed the homeopathic worked as well as the conventional spray. This study had 146 participants.

Homeopathic research with placebos have not been as favorable. Some trials show homeopathy works better than a placebo while other trials there is no difference between the placebo and homeopathy drug. Much of these trials do not individualize remedies such as a homeopath would do. Allopathic medicines compared to the placebo would be an intriguing comparison.

Allopathic medicine users may also be experiencing the placebo effect. How much a placebo heals a patient is not certain. Trials show placebo may help cure a patient’s sickness. The effective the placebo has a medication is still being studied.
