Is Liquid Hoodia an Effective Supplement?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Can liquid hoodia actually work as a weight loss supplement? Will it help control your appetite so you can finally lose weight? Is it really one of the most effective weight loss supplements, or is it over hyped?

Let us chat about how it works. Hoodia gordonii is a succulent that has been used for centuries by South African hunters. They chew on the stem of the plant while hunting to control their hunger so they can get through their long journey. Why was it able to do this?

Drug companies and the weight loss industry wondered, too. With dollar signs in their eyes, they figured it out. Hoodia contains p57, and p57 can imitate blood glucose! Yea! Wait, what does this mean?

You feel hungry when your blood sugar (glucose) levels drop. Your brain responds by sending out a signal to trigger hunger. You need a certain level of blood glucose to produce cellular energy. Your cells need this energy for performance.

So, by fooling the brain into thinking there is plenty of blood glucose, hoodia helps suppress your appetite. This is great, so long as your not diabetic. Diabetics should not take hoodia. Is liquid hoodia safe and effective for everyone else?

Can You Really Lose Weight with Wu Yi Tea?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Seems too easy, right? Drink a few mugs of wu yi tea and lose weight without effort? I did not believe it either and then something peculiar happened over the holiday season.

You should understand that I am in fairly decent shape and if I gain a little weight, it hits my stomach first. Nobody likes the extra roll(s) of fat on their abs, but it happens. I try to watch what I eat, though I am quite fond of an occasional cheeseburger (okay, and wine, chocolate etc.). I enjoy working out, but I do lapse out of my routine when things get hectic like say, Christmas?

Two weeks into January and I am no longer wearing my skinny jeans. I am in my “fat clothes” so I feel comfortable. Not this season, though. Keep reading to find out why.

My husband was given a box of wu yi tea at work. He is not a big tea drinker, so I replaced my couple of mugs of black tea with the wu yi tea. I really enjoyed the flavor, but I was not really drinking it for weight loss. After all, I already knew I was going to gain my holiday five and I would worry about that later.

3 Reasons Why Hoodia Won’t Help Everyone Lose Weight

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Did you pay quite a bit for a hoodia supplement only to find you did not lose any weight? You are not alone. Many have been disappointed by this appetite suppressants inability to help them lose weight. Others, though, have found great success. Why does hoodia work for some and not for others?

First, let me explain how hoodia works and then we will talk about the 3 most common reasons why hoodia failed to help some people.

South Africa is home to the hoodia gordonii cactus. An anthropologist noticed hunters chewing on the stems of this cactus. There was something in hoodia that helped them reduce hunger while hunting in sparse lands.

Later, scientists found a compound called p57 in the hoodia plant. The brain views this compound as glucose. This works to stave off hunger because our hunger is triggered by low blood glucose levels.

When p57 resembles glucose in the body, the hunger signal is not triggered. You end up being able to go longer without food. For this reason, those who are diabetic should speak with their healthcare provider before trying hoodia to suppress their appetite.

Will Green Tea or Hoodia Work for YOUR Weight Loss?

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

We are inundated with advice on weight loss. Whether you are looking for a diet or weight loss supplement, there is sure to be something new. What you really need to think about when considering a weight loss aid or diet is what your individual weight loss problems are. Will the diet or product work for YOU?

How does green tea work to help people lose weight? It contains EGCG which provides energy, speeds metabolism and fat metabolism and blocks a bit of the starches you consume. It also has the ability to produce a sense of well-being. It contains zero calories, making it an excellent replacement for high calorie beverages.

Hoodia, on the other hand, is an appetite suppressant. It contains a compound called p57 which mimics glucose in the body, fooling the brain into thinking blood glucose levels are normal, or at least, not low. Hunger is triggered by low blood glucose levels. So, hoodia helps you lose weight by suppressing the hunger signal.

Do either hoodia or green tea seem to address your weight loss issues?

Should Hoodia Be Banned?

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Many consumers have been able to control their appetite through the use of hoodia gordonii, a popular appetite suppressant. Why is the FDA considering banning hoodia? Have they found it to be unsafe as they did with ephedra years ago?

Ephedra was linked to the deaths of some young women who habitually took this strong, stimulant type appetite suppressant. Their use of ephedra lead to cardiac death and the sale of ephedra in the United States was banned by the FDA.

Now hoodia supplements have come under speculation, but it is not about safety issues; at least not directly. Hoodia is a relatively safe appetite suppressant because it is not a stimulant. Instead it fools the brain into thinking you do not need to eat even though your blood glucose levels have dropped to a level where the brain normally signals hunger.

Unless you are diabetic, this effect usually helps you surpass an appetite that became out of control over the years. Diabetics need to monitor their blood glucose levels, so hoodia is not advised for diabetic patients. Hoodia is rather innocuous for the rest of us. In fact, some proponents of stimulant type appetite suppressants feel hoodia is too mild.

Stay Clear of the Acai Berry Fraud

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

You might have heard of acai berries by now. They are one of the superfoods, containing mass amounts of antioxidants as well as B vitamins and amino acids. More importantly, they contain anthocyanins which are phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are a new area being researched. They are a natural component of plants meant to protect the plant from damage and disease. We receive similar benefits when we eat the plant.

Acai berry nutrients are thought to prevent disease, aid in weight loss and slow aging. More than likely, this is a direct result of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nature of the various nutrients.

The antioxidants fight free radicals, preventing the damaging affects at the cellular level. They also aid in repair and replenishment of cells and bodily tissue. Inflammation causes many disease processes such as atherosclerosis. It is also behind aging and plays a role in obesity. The anti-inflammatory action of acai berries may therefore prevent disease, slow aging and aid in weight loss.
