Get Your Puzzle Fix On The iPhone

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Puzzle games abound in the iTunes App Store. That fact is well established. However, which ones deserve your hard-earned cash? We recently took a look at the offerings and have chosen five new iPhone puzzlers that are worth your dollar. Here are our findings.

Cross Fingers, by Mobigames, introduces gameplay where players must refit wooden shapes into preset slots. There are two types of shapes, light wood and red wood that must be dealt with. While light wood pieces slide and stay in place, red pieces must be held in place as other pieces are arranged around them. If players let go prematurely, the red shapes will return to their previous location. This clever feature grants Cross Fingers its name. Fingers must be twisted in order to hold the red piece in place while other shapes are reordered to solve the puzzle.

Pocketball is built on the Box2D physics engine. In this game, players start with balls that drop at predefined points, and they have to fall into colored pockets. Draw ropes between pegs, which bounce the balls at different angles according to gravity. To complicate things, there are obstacles carefully placed to stump you: bombs that destroy nearby balls, gravity wells, and arrows that push balls in a direction.

Go Clubbing With Groovin’ Blocks On Your iPhone

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Get ready for your next match-three app purchase. Are we serious? Aren’t there enough (too many) match-three games in the app store? While it is arguable that iTunes needs another match-three style game looking to ride the Bejeweled bandwagon, Groovin’ Blocks is not your common match-up app. As the name implies, Groovin’ Blocks has been placed by Zoo Games as more of a jam session experience than a traditional puzzler. And rather than riding the wave of me-toos in the App Store, Groovin’ Blocks rides off it’s own previous success in the Wiiware download store.

Memories of your favorite dance club will flash before your eyes while playing Groovin’ Blocks. Fans of pulsating lights and techno beats will find themselves at home with this app. Rhythm is its soul and puzzling is its heart. In Tetris fashion, players are challenged to align blocks according to color in an empty room. Matching three or more blocks of the same color eliminates them and frees up space for the onslaught of blocks dropping from above. Soon into gameplay, multipliers and power-ups are introduced into the mix. Multipliers are activated by lining up block placement with scrolling vibes entering from the sides of the iPhone screen. These remain in effect until a beat is missed. This process is enhanced when blocks the special markings enter the fray. Dropping these blocks into place with the beat grants a power-up that can increase the value of surrounding blocks.

iPhone Gaming : Apps Prices are too Cheap to be Missed

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

This is a continuation of an article about the iPhone, and why it is my gaming console preference nowadays. Before it was between the ps3 or pc, based on the history of consoles. But now, practicality and “coolness” says to me that iPhone is the gaming console that can be more practical without sacrificing gaming fun.

Great graphics, cool company, although I am not an affiliate or an advertiser for Apple, I think it is the coolest handheld gaming console I possess so far. From the previous article, I have discussed that there are Sony and Nintendo consoles, which are all great no questions about it, but the iPhone caught my attention a few days after I met it and didn’t let go.

There are many apps out there for our own mobile phones, and we enjoy games while on the road or bored. As for me, there were times that games in phones were a burden because first of all, my mobile phone ( I don’t want to name names ) didn’t have great graphics and a large memory to keep up with the gaming needs. And it made the phone slow and could not function properly anymore.

iPhone Gaming : My Game Engine of Choice

Friday, October 9th, 2009

I used to own many game consoles as I was young. The game boy, the nintendo, and you can go old as you can go, I have it.But when I grew older, I slowly realized that gaming with all those big cartridges may not suit me, so it kept the gamers gaming spirit suppressed inside.

Then born was the PSP’s, the Nintendo DS, and other portable gaming consoles that went popular with all those cool graphics and great games of every genre. From racing to RPG, to more casual games when you just want to “kill time” while waiting in line or something like that.

It sure made some high hopes for me, because I can bring my gaming experience anywhere and do it when I choose, but there is another tiny dilemma, working in the corporate world, don’t you think its a turn off seeing a grown man working with a PSP in hand? Well, in my opinion at least, I was not comfortable with the thought.

I wanted something discreet, yet it could deliver the gaming experience I always wanted, the great graphics, the gameplay, and the gamer inside of me could be unleashed.
