Get More Fruit and Veggies in Your Diet

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

“Eat your veg!” is the phrase many have suffered from while they were kids. Many probably promised to them never eat those “things” again.

If you are one of them this can disappoint you but fruits and veg are very important part of our diets and you can’t really have a normal well functioning and healthy body without them. Sad, isn’t it?

You still can live and survive without them but your body would look and feel much different.

Speaking of vegetables, the biggest problem is that we tend to overcook them, making them undesirable, colourless and their consistence impossible to enjoy. Also veggies lose their good properties and vitamins and it’s just a waste of money generally.

A normal human being should eat 5-10 servings of fruits and/or vegetables a day what seems a lot. So, what a serving include then? A medium sized fruit is one serving, a medium sized veggie is one serving, a medium sized apple, banana or carrot is one serving. 5-10 servings per day don’t look so hard to eat now, doesn’t it?

What Are The Key Elements Of A Healthy Eating Diet

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

The best healthy eating diets are those that include a variety of key elements – protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Some of the most important vitamins and minerals include: salt, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, copper, zinc chromium and selenium.

To know how much of each of these elements, and especially vitamins and minerals, that you need each day depends heavily on your individual preferences, height and weight. But the bottom line is that the healthiest eaters use a variety of vitamins and minerals, limit their intake of processed foods and white sugar, and see many fruits and vegetables on their plates each week. This kind of intake on a regular basis offers the body the nutrients it so desperately needs to keep it running in tip-top shape.

I’ve never been a fan of fad diets. I really don’t even believe in them. No grapefruit, liquid or all-fruit or veggie diets for me! Keeping a balance diet is most important and can provide your body with all it needs to stay active and enjoy life.

Learn Tips On 5 A Day: A Healthy Diet of Fruits and Vegetables for Your Family

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) promotes a healthy lifestyle of eating five portions of fruits & veggies each day.5 A day is a slogan that sounds great, but how can we actually integrate this into a child’s life?

We start by recognizing what’s at stake. Children face more and more health issues each year. The reports of childhood allergies, diabetes, or even immune deficiencies continue to grow. Then there are the kids who are just generally sick or overweight.

So what do we do about the increase in childhood obesity and all the health issues that children face these days? Autism, allergies, skin issues, weak immune systems – the list goes on and on. In the beginning, there was “the pregnant mom”. It is fully understood that healthy eating for children begins in the womb. Whatever foods mom is attracted to consistently throughout the pregnancy, the child is more likely to gravitate to after birth.

Everyone has a great understanding about fruit and vegetable nutrition and their benefits for children; however, many don’t place importance on developing good eating habits throughout pregnancy. We talk about supplements and specific foods that are important to eat for a healthy child’s development, but we never educate pregnant moms on healthy, balanced and nutritious meals. If we did so, then the milk produced by the mother would be so much more balanced and rich in disease-preventing, immune-building essentials.

Eating for two is not necessary, although this is a common belief among pregnant women. The most common advice that expectant mothers hear is that one should double her food intake because there are now two to share the nutrients from the food taken in. This is an erroneous thinking that needs to be corrected because if such belief persists, then it will be that pregnant women may be putting themselves at risk.

When a woman is pregnant, there may be some weight gain. However, the weight gain should not be from an increased intake of food. Rather, it should come from the growth of the baby. Because the baby is growing, a pregnant woman has to make sure that she and her baby are getting the right amount and kind of nutrients to ensure the health of both of them.

What Is the Proper Diet during Pregnancy?

Eating fresh fruits with doses of green leafy vegetables are great for pregnant women. Moreover, one needs to avoid liquor and stop smoking lest the baby will develop some deformities or health problems. Aside from these, one also needs to remember the following to obtain the right amount of nutrition during pregnancy:
