The Home Health Practitioner: Using Calendula

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Infused Calendula oil has long been used as a component of natural skin care preparations for its special soothing properties. The oil of the flowers had not been available as an essential oil for most of its history, as the flowers had been too delicate to process in the typical steam distillation process. With the recent introduction of the Supercritical cold-extraction process, a concentrated Calendula CO2 essential oil is now readily available, making it very easy to include this wonderful concentrated in any skin care and wound healing recipe. This new Calendula extract has been the subject of much research over the last several years, confirming its nearly miraculous regenerative, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions — further encouraging its use for natural skin care products, whether purchased already blended or for you to make a personal formula at home.

Using Aromatherapy to Support Better Immune Response

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Why Disease is Prevalent

Humans have been given an incredible immune system – able to ward off some of the nastiest of microscopic invaders. Yet, if this defense system is compromised due to an overload of toxins (from the environment, our diet or our stress level), cells tissues become exhausted and susceptible to attack. Since environmental toxins are on the rise and pathogens seemingly on every nook and cranny, it is important to maintain a healthy immune system. If the immune system is compromised, a breech in wellness occurs. This can lead to a vicious cycle of sickness leading to more sickness and eventually disease.

Using Essential Oils for Immune Support

In these modern times, many are familiar with the stress-relieving qualities of aromatic essential oils and for certain oils, awaken a fatigued body or mind. Well-established research indicates that essential oils are dynamic antimicrobials. Such characteristics are helpful in supporting a fully functional immune system; stress and non-beneficial microbes are known to weaken the immune system’s army of defenses. Few are aware that essential oils can actually strengthen the capacity of the immune system directly to fight off foreign invaders.

The Modern Aromatherapy Revolution

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Therapeutic use of essential oils in the alternative health and wellness arena is on the rise; more and more people are venturing beyond mainstream ‘aroma’ therapy and finding the value in true therapeutic grade Aromatherapy products. Education regarding the efficacy of essential oils in treating certain illness has been hard to come by in the US, a symptom of much of the natural health industry. There is in fact, legislation floating around Congress (which has already been enacted in Europe) to limit your access to natural medicines, which may include essential oils. Why? Because the pharmaceutical companies in the highest-profit industry on earth, want your business. This is one reason Aromatherapy has not gotten beyond the ‘aroma’ part, and why essential oils have yet to take their proper place in your holistic medical care.

So-called ‘alternative’ treatments encompass virtually all medicine mankind has ever used, and our species by almost every measure is exceptionally successful. And there are many physicians who specialize in alternative medicine whom believe that natural treatments and lifestyle modifications are the ONLY way to truly cure the vast majority of illness. So how effective, really, are essential oils and the science of aromatherapy in treating stress and disease in humans? How can you learn more about the oils and their potential to help you? Let’s review the current state of affairs, and see how you might investigate their use in your own natural health and wellness lifestyle.

What You Gain From Using Reed Diffuser Oils

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

It would be a home living faux pas if I recommended all of you simply use Febreze to “cover up” any unpleasant scents in the home. In fact, I find that rather tacky. If I had things my way, everyone would be enjoying the fragrance of reed diffuser oils.

The wonderful benefits of using a reed diffuser oil in the home are multi-faceted. Not only does the oil get released into the room at a slow and steady rate, it also does not overpower the room as the electric plug-in scented wax/oils would.

More is not necessarily better in these cases when you want to establish a nice and subtle balance of interior design, lighting, scent, and mood.

Aromatherapy is immediately what comes to mind, as it entails health as well as spiritual benefits when used at home. If you are unfamiliar with aromatherapy, you may understand that somehow your mood lightens with ease upon smelling a draft of rose petals. And when your mood is alleviated, so is your physical well being.

The Rewards Of Using Homemade Bath Salts

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Every time I visited to the convenience store, I would see an entire aisle of bath products including colorful bath salts. Intriguing as they were to me, I would simply look but not purchase. Who actually uses bath salts at home? I hadn’t a clue on what they really were, and what they were for. Just no plain idea on what help they would do me.

But, it is better than late than never. Now that I know about what aromatherapy is and how natural elements are used to alleviate different skin and body ailments. It is a neat fact to know that this is a natural effect of stepping into a hot spring, or into a natural mineral bath (where natural salts exist). Scrubbing the skin to remove dead cells is a very important beauty and health regimen, so it is also nice to know that you can do this at home with homemade bath salts.

Why is exfoliating the skin so important? Well, when you do you are opening the pores and encouraging the sweat and bacteria to purge itself and attach to the bath salts in the bath water. When your pores are so fresh and so clean of all that grime, you are taking away the ammo to create pimples! The thought of that should make you feel all the more happy and content.

Coconuts: An Amazing Health Food

Monday, March 8th, 2010

The coconut is a beautiful gift to the peoples of the world. The Sanskrit language calls the coconut palm ‘kalpa vriksah,’ meaning that it is a plant which gives everything one needs to survive. The coconut is an old tree and a distant relative of grasses, and its meat, water and oil have been used for nutrition and health by many cultures. In India in particular, the coconut has been used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine, a system which has inspired aromatherapists, nutritionists and naturopaths the world over.

The coconut’s liquid filtration system is one of the reasons why this beloved plant is so nourishing. Every liter of water in its shell takes almost nine months to be drawn up and through the plant, where it is deposited in the nut. More electrolytes are found in coconut water than in most other plants, making it an ideal hydrating liquid. Drinking a mixture of 55% coconut and 45% green juice gives the body an immediate burst of natural energy.

What A Reed Diffuser Oil Is

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Well, the first question you may be asking is, “what is a reed diffuser in the first place?” What may be sounding like an electrical musical instrument terminology is actually a lot less technical and a lot more aromatherapy-based instead. It is an amazing multi-purposed item to have in the home.

Reed diffusers are literally the snippets of reed plant stems. Yes, they can be confused for bamboo or other plants, but it is the special way that reed stems are structured that allow for scented oils to wick, travel up the stem, and disperse into the surrounding environment to make for a great natural air scenting.

But, where do they come from?

The natural scent diffusers are found in large bunches together near water.

As they are not a part a tree, they are essentially their very own plant structure, and they are naturally functional so the scented oils can diffuse into the air at a natural rate.

It is the large amount of pores in these reed stems that essentially act as a grouping of straws, straws that suction the scented oils up and out into the air.

Taking a look at the natural health movement.

Friday, February 5th, 2010

We all strive for holistic health. Being sick all the time, while common in this day and age, is horribly inefficient, and a huge inconvenience to our coworkers and family, as well as a strain on our health care system. Even something as small as a headache or stomach cramps can throw a wrench in our routines. This is why you’re reading this right now, because you want to be free of health related nuisances. A holistic approach could be the answer, as it protects you from medicine related side effects, as well as keeping your mind, spirit and emotions in check as well.

While looking at health in this new light, many people are practicing preventative healthcare. But when we do get sick, there are other options than traditional modern medicine. Some of the alternative healing methods people are rediscovering include aromatherapy, massage, herbal medicine and acupuncture.

Alternative by definition means having options, therefore alternative medicine means you have the option to use different, possibly unconventional treatments to cure your ailments. These approaches could include so many things, from traditional chinese medicine which primarily consists of eating plants, herbs and barks, to yoga, an ancient Indian technique, to meditation, to massage, whether Thai, shiatsu, Swedish or others. Aromatherapy is a possibility, and acupuncture is proven to work on many ailments.
