There are all kinds of hair loss treatments available on the web and other places but only a few will really help you with your hair loss. You can find all kinds of remedies and natural hair growth products with big claims. The problem is most of these have never been studied in clinical trials to prove whether they are really effective or not.

The good news is there are two US FDA approved drugs that have been shown to have positive effects on hair loss. These products are predominately used to stop hair loss and keep what hair you have growing and staying healthy. They both will get some of the hair follicles that have stopped producing hair shaft material active again but in reality not a lot.

The first drug, Finasteride, was originally being developed to treat male urinary tract problems. In particular, it was targeting enlarge prostates. During clinical trials anecdotal evidence indicated many men on the drug were also seeing relief from their hair problems.

Further clinical trials targeting this new benefit showed that the drug did have a positive effect for men suffering from male pattern baldness. Finasteride is an oral medication which means it is taken in tablet form by the mouth. The treatment must be continued after being begun or the gains will quickly be lost and the hair will start to fall out again.

This treatment works well for men only. Women of child bearing age are never prescribed this medication because of the potential for birth defects. In fact, it is so powerful that women are not even allowed to touch the tablets because the active ingredient may be absorbed through the skin. The drug is effective for men but there are other potential side effect concerns also.

The second drug approved by the US FDA as a treatment for hair thinning and balding is Minoxidil. This drug was also shown to have a positive effect on hair loss while trials were being conducted on another condition. Minoxidil is a vasodilator medication which means it helps to make the tiny blood vessels in the body larger which in turn lowers high blood pressure.

This apparently also allows for more blood supply to reach the hair follicles and thus increase hair growth. Minoxidil is applied topically, that is it rubbed into the scalp, on a daily basis. This drug does seem to be safe for both women and men which is great news for female pattern baldness sufferers.

Both of these drugs have been shown conclusively to have positive effects on pattern baldness. If you are suffering from this condition then one of these may be the solution you have been searching for. The thing to remember is there are some FDA approved remedies that will help you in your fight against baldness.
