Truth is stranger than fiction and the truth is that 73 million adult Americans suffer from hypertension. High blood pressure is caused when the blood circulates in excessive pressure the arteries. The problem could be due to genetic behavior, excessive use of salt in food and thickening of arterial walls. Hypertension does not spare young people as well. Nearly two million children and teen agers are also affected by this problem.
Hypertension increases the chances of heart failure, stroke and aneurysm. Researchers also found that high blood pressure tend to open door for Alzheimer’s disease by reducing blood flow in brain.
According to Dr. Cyrus Raji of the Pittsburgh University, co-author of this research paper argues that Alzheimer’s does not have any direct connection with hypertension. But prolonged complain of high blood pressure makes the brain susceptible for such problem. Hence it could be concluded that high blood pressure actually acts as a catalyst in the process.
The experiments were conducted taking the help of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The instrument measured the blood flow in brain for number of people. Hypertension affected participants were found to be having less amount of blood flow to the brain. It was even lower in case of patients with complains of both hypertension and Alzheimer’s. This established the fact that the two are interrelated.
Researchers came to this conclusion that good vascular health is prerequisite to having a good mental health as well. As described by co-author Dr. Oscar Lopez, of the Pittsburgh University, it is essential for the Alzheimer’s patients to detect the high blood pressure in early stage, and then remedy the problem with very careful treatment. That will help Alzheimer’s patient clinically a lot.
As described by Dr. Raji, the way high blood pressure reduces the normal blood flow volume in brain actually is responsible for brain disease like Alzheimer’s. The two could be complementing each other.
