An element that creates a natural response among members of the same species is known as pheromones. Behavior and hormone levels are directly affected by these messengers that are released from the body. Human pheromones are believed to function in a similar manner.
Most studies about pheromones have to do with a woman’s menstrual cycle and how they coordinate with other women’s menstrual cycles through undetected odors that the body sends out during this time. Exposure to the sweat of another woman, that was collected during different times of the month, was done to the women in the group.
Depending on when the sweat was collected, the results were that menstrual cycles were affected. The study concluded that two types of pheromones were used in signaling these changes. One for lengthening and one for shortening the menstrual cycle. Due to certain methods used in the study, the results are highly questionable.
It is also believed that the armpit of a male releases pheromones too. The theory is that the sweat from men has pheromones. Studies regarding menstrual cycles that are not regular have shown that exposure to extracts from a males armpit can cause the periods to become normal.
Androstadienone that can be found in a males sweat includes higher amounts of cortisol in women. The nose detects this chemical substance. This particular substance is believed to effect the opposite sexes endocrine balance.
Studies have also been done that show that a certain chemical in women’s perfume increases the likelihood of intimate contact with males. Suggestions that this study has several flaws have also surfaced.
It is also possible that odor cues related to the immune system may help in selecting mates that are not related to one another. Proof exists that shows the differences in the brains response to the two odors, between homosexual and heterosexual males.
Since the theory is that the scents result in sexual arousal, it stands to reason that homosexual men react in the same manner that heterosexual women do to the scents. To further test the theory, homosexual women were included in the research. The same findings resulted as the prior study. So, sexual orientation may have more to do with pheromones and biological sources than originally thought.
Perfumes and body sprays have claimed to contain human sex pheromones which are supposed to act like an aphrodisiac. It has been proven that pheromones have a great deal to do with sexual attraction.
