In those parts of the country where deep snow is a common winter occurrence, it is desirable to have some means of marking the edge of the driveway so that a car can break through the snow in the proper place without running over and injuring the lawn.
One easy way to avoid marring the appearance of the property with huge boulders, etc., is to drive lengths of scrap pipe 15 or 20 feet apart and flush with the ground along the edge of the driveway. Then have another set of metal rods or wooden dowels with their tips painted red or black or with fluorescent paint, that can be set in the pipe supports when the snow season nears and will stand above the deepest snows expected. When the snow disappears, the dowels or rods can be pulled out of the pipes which will remain inconspicuous but ready for use the following winter.

An advantage of a hard surfaced driveway or turncourt is the fact that you can play games on it and the small fry can enjoy using their tricycles, scooters, and roller skates on it. The surface can be marked for shuffleboard and various court games.
Utilizing a Turncourt
Where the garage faces the rear of the house and driveway coming in beside the house is widened into a turncourt area, the latter can serve a double duty as a drying court. See Fig. 170. Besides making full use of valuable space, this arrangement has a distinct advantage for the housewife since she does not have to walk through wet, muddy areas to get to the drying area.
Corner Lot
If you have a corner lot where one street has less traffic than the other (as is usually the case), try to locate your house and garage so that the driveway comes in from the street with the less traffic. This will often make it possible to have a shorter driveway, which will make the cost less. It may also avoid the necessity of having an unattractive garage door facing the front of the house. Of course it depends somewhat on the house and your habits, whether you park the car in front, of the house at times or always garage it. Curved Driveway
On a larger property it may be possible to curve the driveway in such a way that a person approaching the house gets two or more different framed views of your home.
