Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, has long been considered a grown up issue, with an increased prevalence the older people get. These days, though, there is more focus on hypertension problems faced by children. A few studies show that more than 6 percent of teens and 1 percent of kids under twelve have this dilemma. The definition of hypertension in children is defined as having blood pressure that is higher than 95% of the children of the same age group, race and gender. To identify the cause of hypertension in children is becoming a significant concern.

It’s well known that U.S. citizens on the whole are growing more overweight. That this situation is not confined to adults and can affect even children is a factor that is sometimes ignored. A startling 33% of children in this country are thought to be overweight to some extent. This is the main cause for hypertension in children.

There are ongoing studies on the link between overweight and high blood pressure, but we certainly know without doubt that such a link exists both in kids and in grownups. And this is the one factor that can be easily controlled without the need for any medical intervention. If kids are encouraged to be outside more often, the natural energy they’ve got will make them engage in physical activities that will burn additional calories. This will go far in eliminating a key cause of hypertension in kids.

But obesity is not always caused by lack of exercise. Genetics is one of the reasons for obesity and the resulting hypertension in children. If the parents have weight issues or problems like diabetes, the children should be checked for genetic or glandular problems that have caused this condition and which can be treated by medication.

Other reason for obesity and high BP in children is mainly due to bad eating habits. Children are drawn towards junk food and bad eating habits. Apart from a natural predisposition for fast food, locations serving this type of food are typically common teen hangouts. The consumption of the unhealthy food increases dramatically once there.

There are various medical conditions which are hard to discern which could also be a cause of childhood hypertension. They include sleep apnea, even mild forms, kidney issues, glandular issues, and lupus. Children may also overeat due to psychological issues. If a child is found to be suffering from hypertension, it is best to consult a doctor, even if obesity seems to be the obvious cause. There may be underlying aspects which causing the hypertension that might need treatment, apart from eliminating the obesity issue.

There are various approaches of high blood pressure control. You can try certain natural high blood pressure control methods, or you might have to opt for medication. You need to consult your doctor to see what’s best for you.
