Trading Places: This movie is testing heredity vs. environment by switching a “have” preppy Aykroyd and a “have-not” road hustler Murphy. Murphy, in his second film, is a powerhouse, and makes up for director Landis’ pleasures like a subplot engaging a horny gorilla. Cast includes Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, Denholm Elliott, Kristin Holby, Al Franken, Tom Davis, and Bill Cobbs.(116 minutes,’83)
Faraway So Close: The exact Wenders cast if not the exact Wenders film takes up where the more victorious Wings of Desire left off. This time it is life saver Sander who becomes mortal, joining his old celestial buddy who’s now wedded to a carnival entertainer. Lighter going than its predecessor, although additionally more lightweight; it’s still a good film to watch. Cast includes Otto Sander, Bruno Ganz, Solveig Dommartin, Peter Falk, Willem Dafoe, Lou Reed, and Mikhail Gorbachev. (140 minutes,’93)
Ricochet: Nick Styles is now the assistant DA of Los Angeles. Years ago, as a rookie cop, he helped put master criminal Earl Talbot Blake behind bars. Now Blake has escaped from prison. He has only one thing on his mind, revenge.
Shades of Fear: Flat, disheartening drama in reference to a youthful female Ayola who yearns to become a guide and the assorted characters that crosses her road as she cruises for England. The British version helped make it better. Cast includes Rakie Ayola, John Hurt, Jonathan Pryce, Vanessa Redgrave, and Dorothy Tutin. (92 minutes,’93)
South Park: Bigger, Longer And Uncut: Our dynamic four are in top form in the first feature length film of the TV series. There is a new movie at the theater, a Terrence and Phillips film, and the boys are off to see it. When they arrive at the theater they can’t get in because of the R rating. They overcome this obstacle by paying off a street drunk to get the tickets for them. This is the boy’s first real intense introduction to foul language. They leave the movie fully trained in the new words, and use them whenever they can. This leads to outrage from the parents. Since Terrence and Phillip are Canadian, this ends with the US and Canada going to war.
Navy Seals: Navy Seals go into the Mid-East to rescue captured US pilots. During this successful rescue, the Seals observe that the enemy terrorist have Stinger missiles in their possession. With no time to destroy the missiles, they leave them behind and complete the rescue mission. We need to recover these weapons before terrorists have the chance to use them.
The Sea Gypsies: Fine family venture has Logan cruising round the globe with his young family. Becoming shipwrecked in Alaska becomes the ultimate adventure. Cast includes Robert Logan, Heather Rattray, Mikki Jamison-Olsen, Shannon Saylor, and Damitri Patterson. (101 minutes,’78)
